How to Prepare for
CANRA-QE 2027

A clear plan for the new Canadian naturopathic qualifying examinations: what is confirmed, what is still changing, and how to study for Written Part I, Written Part II and the OSCE.

Independent BoardQBank guide · Last fact-checked October 29, 2026

01 / KNOW THE EXAM

What changes in 2027?

CANRA-QE is a set of national entry-to-practice assessments built around the Canadian National Entry-to-Practice Competencies for Naturopathic Doctors. The exam suite includes two written MCQ parts and a practical OSCE.

Confirmed by CANRA

  • Two written multiple-choice examination components: Part I and Part II.
  • One Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with timed simulated clinical stations.
  • Five national competency domains provide the preparation foundation.
  • Written-exam details are expected in early 2027; exact topic allocation and question counts should not be assumed yet.

Ontario transition

The College of Naturopaths of Ontario begins using CANRA-QE for entry-to-practise on April 1, 2027. Its previous Clinical Practical, Clinical Sciences and Biomedical exams end after the final Winter 2027 sessions.

Existing valid passing results may carry forward under Ontario regulator’s transition arrangements. Candidates should confirm their individual requirements with the regulator before registering.

Important: This is a study guide, not an official CANRA syllabus. CANRA has not yet announced detailed Written Part I and Part II content specifications. Keep using official updates and the national competency profile as your main reference. Review official CANRA-QE information.
02 / CHOOSE YOUR PREPARATION TRACK

Study all three components with one plan

Each track has a dedicated BoardQBank study area. The suggestions below describe useful preparation activities; they are not claimed to be the official content split between Written Part I and Part II.

01 / WRITTEN EXAM

Written Part I

Strengthen core reasoning and knowledge through consistent MCQ practice.

  • Use the five national competency domains as your organizing framework.
  • Practise original MCQs and explain why alternatives are incorrect.
  • Track uncertain topics and review them every week.
Start Part I →
02 / WRITTEN EXAM

Written Part II

Apply clinical reasoning through integrated patient scenarios and management decisions.

  • Work through chief complaints and differential diagnoses.
  • Review safe treatment, contraindications and referral decisions.
  • Use clinical case questions, rationales and timed mocks.
Start Part II →
03 / PRACTICAL EXAM

OSCE clinical skills

Rehearse the real-world clinical skills described by CANRA.

  • Practise timed history, focused exams and patient communication.
  • Demonstrate safety, consent, emergency escalation and documentation.
  • Rehearse relevant hands-on skills under qualified supervision.
Start OSCE →
03 / A FLEXIBLE STUDY PLAN

Your 12-week CANRA-QE preparation roadmap

An adaptable BoardQBank plan for someone starting now. If your exam is sooner, prioritize high-risk gaps; if you have more time, repeat the cycle with deeper review.

Build clinical reasoning
WEEKS 05–06

Therapeutic management

Safety, indications and contraindications, evidence appraisal, counselling and referral.

Prioritize patient safety
WEEKS 07–08

Integrated case practice

Mixed MCQ sets; analyse errors; link patient presentations to management and documentation.

Move from recall to application

Rehearse and repeat
WEEKS 11–12

Mock exams & remediation

Review weak areas, do timed mixed practice, rehearse clinical stations and verify logistics.

Consolidate, avoid cramming

Suggested sequence, not an official CANRA study schedule. Adjust for your training, regulator, and booked examination date.

04 / BUILD A ROUTINE

A practical weekly study method

A repeatable sample routine is more useful than studying one subject repeatedly without testing yourself.

Example daily study session

  1. 45–60 minutes: national competencies and focused topic review.
  2. 45 minutes: original MCQ practice with rationales and an error log.
  3. 30 minutes: one integrated case or patient-management discussion.
  4. 30–45 minutes: OSCE skills, communication, safety or documentation.
  5. 10 minutes: write down one gap to address tomorrow.

Recommended frequency: five study days, one mock/station practice day, and one rest or light-review day per week.

How to review a wrong answer

  1. Identify the clinical clue you missed.
  2. Explain the reason for the correct answer and why other options are weaker.
  3. Check red flags, scope of practice and required escalation.
  4. Add a one-sentence learning point to your error log.
  5. Retry a similar case after several days.

For OSCE practice, ask an appropriately qualified observer for feedback on clinical safety and technique; text checklists cannot replace hands-on training.

05 / STUDY THE NATIONAL PROFILE

Five CANRA competency domains

CANRA states that the national profile contains 22 key competencies and 62 enabling competencies within these five domains. Use the official competency profile to define your learning objectives.

01

Professionalism

Ethics, boundaries, safe practice and informed consent.

02

Communication

Patient-centred interviews, shared decisions and handovers.

03

Assessment & Diagnosis

History, examination, diagnostic reasoning and red flags.

04

Therapeutic Management

Safe planning, treatment, monitoring, referrals and emergencies.

05

Records Management

Clear documentation, follow-up plans and confidentiality.

Study tip: For every clinical case, ask what competent professional conduct, communication, assessment, treatment, and documentation would look like. Access national competencies.

NEW / CANRA-QE POLICY EX10.00

Know the official 2026 CANRA-QE policy

The College of Naturopaths of Ontario approved policy EX10.00 on September 30, 2026. For eligible candidates outside PLAR, exams can be completed in any order. The policy outlines a three-attempt framework, possible remediation after a second unsuccessful attempt, and two-year validity of passing results.

Eligibility and preparation

  • CNME-accredited naturopathic education or PLAR eligibility.
  • At least 220 didactic hours and 30 clinical hours in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Ask the Ontario regulator about any prior passing results and applicable transition arrangements.

Check before registering

  • Official passing marks are not specified in EX10.00.
  • Exam attempts and remediation are regulated; do not assume an unlimited number of attempts.
  • A date inconsistency appears in the policy text; Ontario regulator's public transition page confirms April 1, 2027.

08 / COMMON STUDENT QUESTIONS

Questions about the new exam

Can I rely only on the previous clinical sciences syllabus?

Previous preparation resources can help review clinical skills and knowledge, but they are not an official CANRA-QE blueprint. Make the new national competency profile your starting point, and update your written-exam plan when CANRA publishes its detailed specifications.

Are Written Part I and Part II topic weightings confirmed?

No detailed written-component specifications are published on CANRA’s official examination page as of October 29, 2026. BoardQBank Part I and Part II module groupings are provisional preparation frameworks.

Do all Ontario applicants need all three exam components?

Not necessarily. The Ontario regulator publishes transition arrangements for valid prior passing results and different registration pathways, including labour mobility. Ask the Ontario regulator what you personally still need before registering.

Will online MCQs alone prepare me for the OSCE?

No. In addition to knowledge, OSCE preparation requires observed hands-on practice, clinical communication, physical examination, safety actions and feedback. The online cases are a supplement to supervised practice, not a replacement.
